Fermento Liberica – the award-winning beer in 2024

Great news to share! Fermento Liberica was awarded the gold medal at the “Frankfurt International Trophy“ competition. A fine achievement for this award-winning beer after the silver medal it won in 2022 at the “Swiss Beer Award“.

The “Frankfurt International Trophy“ is a prestigious international beer and wine competition held annually. In 2024, 640 beers were selected internationally to participate and were tasted blind over two days by beer sommeliers and experts in the historic hall of the famous Gesellschaftshaus Palmengarten in the heart of Frankfurt. Upon invitation, we chose to participate with our Liberica because the competition has a strong connection to the world of gastronomy and, each year, the honorary president of the competition is a renowned chef. This year, the president was Martin Scharff, chef at the Schlossweinstube restaurant in Heidelberg.

This is definitely our competition and we are proud of the award-winning beer Liberica! We at Fermento love food and believe that great beers deserve great food. We pair our beers with delicious food and enjoy cooking special dishes with Fermento beers.

The competition standard and method

The competition is ISO 9001-certified, which ensures that all beers are evaluated to a high standard. At the Frankfurt International Trophy, through a blind tasting, the judging panel ensures that each beer is evaluated according to quality parameters, avoiding any influence from e.g. label design, bottle shape and any message communicated by the brand. The evaluation focuses explicitly on the beer. And the beer is the result of the brewmaster’s passion and skill.

This is not the first time we have had an award-winning beer at the Frankfurt International Trophy. In 2023, both the honey beer Fermento Ventuno 21 and the weizen Fermento Mistral won the gold medal in the respective categories of special beer and modern weizen. It was our first international competition and we felt honoured but also rather surprised by the result. As we are still a young brewery, we participate in these competitions mainly to get impartial feedback from the experts.

The beers are divided into their respective categories (e.g. Pilsner, Weizen, Stout, etc.) and compete on the basis of their score after evaluation. Liberica scored 90/100 points against an overall average of 76 points for all beers participating in the competition. It also received very high scores for nose intensity and nose aromas, as well as for flavour persistence and bitterness.

Our passion in the award-winning beer Liberica

Liberica is a beer brewed with a selection of four roasted malts that impart a chocolate and coffee flavour. Fermento beers are all brewed in Switzerland, and somehow it came natural to us to brew a chocolate-flavoured beer. We sometimes refer to Liberica as Schoggibier (chocolate beer) with our enthusiastic customers, even though we do not add chocolate. The style is that of English stouts and is dry, unlike Baltic stouts which are sweet and have strong caramel notes.

Passionate as we are about food, we recommend drinking Liberica with classic burgers and steaks, but also the Irish way, with oysters. We also love it with cheddar cheese.

Recently, we have also drunk Liberica stout with French “Mimolette” cheese and with soft cheeses such as “Le Moelleux du Revard“ or “Reblochon“. Stouts are also great with desserts and the first choice is of course chocolate and cakes, such as tiramisu. We also made a Birramisu cake with Liberica and in our project One Chef, One Fermento Beer, Chef Denis Parrotta prepared the dessert ‘Deconstructed Cannolo with beer stout’, a reinterpretation of the iconic Sicilian cannolo. Try them all. It’s worth it! It is worth it!

Finally, we have also developed our beer sauce Thorin Tungtol, which contains a Liberica reduction, tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, and fermented habanero pepper for a spicy flavour. This sauce is great on barbecues, sautéed meat, sandwiches and salads.
