Fermento sponsors the “Pint of Science” 2024 in Basel

We at the Fermento Brewery are really excited to be sponsoring the “Pint of Science Festival“ in Basel, which will take place from 13 to 15 May 2024. The idea behind the festival is really simple: you go to one of the selected bars (there are three in Basel), get a beer, sit down and enjoy the beer and the talk of one of the scientists on a few really interesting topics.

This is a great chance to hear from researchers and academic professionals sharing their scientific material with the public. The festival started in the UK in 2012 and now there are thousands of events in more than 500 cities worldwide.

We met the guys from Pint of Science last year (2023) and we sponsored the event in Basel with our beers.

Prof. Graeme Walker,

Why we are sponsoring "Pint of Science"

Basel is a fantastic hub for science, not just in Europe but all over the world. We also gave a talk at one of the venues about Fermento, sharing our knowledge on brewing and how to pair beer with cheese using a scientific approach based on balancing the taste of food with the most suitable beer.

We’re delighted to be sponsoring the event again this year in Basel. We love science and want to share our passion for brewing. Only with great science can you get the perfect pint.

We chose Fermento as the name of our brewery because it explains what we do. The science is in the name as well as in the beer! At the end of 2023, we decided to revive our beer blog with the goal of increasing awareness about beer.

Our blog posts focus on brewing, beer styles and food. We talk about science in the same style as Pint of Science, in an easy and communicative way so that everyone can enjoy reading about beer like never before. This year we have invited Prof. Graeme Walker to share his knowledge and experience here in Basel.

Graeme Walker, our Pint of Science guest speaker in Basel

Graeme is Professor of Zymology (yeast) at the University of Abertay Dundee (UK). He’ll be giving a talk on ‘Trouble brewing’, or more precisely, the science that goes into making the perfect pint. Graeme is a very important person for Fermento. He taught our founder, Raffaele, about the science of brewing, first in 1997 as part of an Erasmus project, and then again in 2003 when he was the supervisor of Raffaele’s PhD project on brewing.

Inspired by the Scottish experience, we at Fermento started brewing in 2017 and our first beer was the Amber Ale, a tribute to the Scottish ale style we loved in Scotland, where it’s known Real Ale. This beer is simply amazing, the bubbles are as fine as the best champagne, and the beer head (foam) is as thick as a cappuccino’s.

We have kept in touch with Graeme over the years, following his research into brewing and other areas of fermentation, such as bioethanol. Watch the short interview with Graeme, a teaser for his visit to Basel and a short introduction to his talk, which will take place on 13 May at h20 in “Didi Offensiv“, a cosy bar on the Rhein in Basel.

Join us on May 13th -15th in Basel!

We would like to thank the Pint of Science team of Switzerland and Basel for organising this event and we are very much looking forward to it. If you are in Basel, join us and if you are in another city, check out the programme on the Pint of Science website and find your nearest pub to join us for this fantastic event. Cheers!
